I work from home. I spend my days accompanied mostly by snores from two large dogs and a periodic walk-by purr from a very small Cerberus - Amon Düül II - Yeti. Walkers and joggers have their ears plugged, holding or wearing their mobile devices. The only sound is the steady drumbeat of their shoes on the pavement.
Solo, lost in their own worlds, while the babies and toddlers they are pushing also are going solo, even more lost in what must seem to be the enormity of sounds and sights of our little neighborhood. Some wave a toy around, but most just stare ahead, or follow the flight of a bird or scurrying rabbit.
For a long time we have known about the importance of language in the neurological, social, cognitive and educational development of children—especially for children from birth to age 6.
It develops from the eye contact, speech and song of loving family members and welcoming neighbors. Silence is the enemy of language development. I too have been way too silent. Perhaps you have, also. WE, you and I, need to show the world by talking to every baby we see. When strolling around the neighborhood, talk about what you see and hear, like plants, animals, gardens, For The Sake Of Not Being Free - Various - Break The Silence Vol 1birds, traffic, other people, dogs, clouds, sky…anything and everything.
